A patient may come in asking about lasers because their skin suddenly feels rough, dull, or unusually sensitive.
They’re expecting us to talk about devices.
Instead, I often ask a much less exciting question.
“What have you been putting on your skin lately?”
Sometimes the answer is simple.
Other times, we start going through the routine and the list keeps growing.
Cleanser. Toner. Essence. Vitamin C. Retinol. Exfoliating acids. Masks. Spot treatments. Several different serums.
None of these products are necessarily bad.
But more skincare doesn’t always mean healthier skin.
I’ve seen patients become frustrated because they’re doing everything they think they should be doing, yet their skin seems to be getting worse.
So the natural reaction is to add something else.
A stronger product.
A different active ingredient.
Or another procedure.
But sometimes, adding more is exactly what I don’t want to do.
If the skin is already irritated or the barrier is compromised, my first priority may be getting it back to a calmer, more stable condition before thinking about what treatment comes next.
This is one reason I think the distinction between “home skincare” and “clinic treatments” is more artificial than people realize.
What happens at home affects what I see in the consultation room.
And what I see in the consultation room affects what I’m comfortable doing to the skin.
I also think skincare has become surprisingly complicated.
Patients sometimes feel that a sophisticated routine should contain many steps.
Personally, I’m less interested in how many products someone uses than in whether their skin is actually tolerating them well.
A simple routine that keeps the skin comfortable and consistent can sometimes be far more useful than an impressive shelf of products that constantly leaves the skin irritated.
This doesn’t mean every skin concern can be solved by simplifying skincare.
There are many conditions and concerns where professional treatment can make a meaningful difference.
But I don’t think every problem should begin with a procedure.
Sometimes the most useful thing I can recommend in a consultation is not another laser or another injectable.
It’s giving the skin a chance to settle.
Because sometimes the skin doesn’t need another treatment.
It needs a chance to become healthy enough to benefit from one.
