It’s the same name, skin booster—so why are the results so different?
💡 At a glance
· HiloWave, Revive, and standard skin boosters all use hyaluronic acid (HA), but the 'cross-linking' method that binds the HA and the overall design are different.
· Standard skin booster (non-cross-linked HA): hydration and radiance appear quickly, but the effect lasts only a few weeks, so repeat treatments are expected.
· Revive (Belotero Revive): by adding glycerol to cross-linked HA, hydration improvement has been reported even after one treatment, with effects lasting for months.
· HiloWave: by combining high-molecular-weight and low-molecular-weight HA, it is designed to target not only hydration but also elasticity and natural volume.
· In short, if you need instant radiance before an event, choose a standard skin booster; if long-lasting moisture is the priority, choose Revive; if you want to address both inner dryness and elasticity, choose HiloWave.
The factor that separates the three treatments is not the ingredient, but whether the HA has been cross-linked. Cross-linking refers to the process of binding HA molecules together to slow down breakdown. Hyaluronic acid in the dermis of the skin is naturally broken down very quickly, with a half-life of less than a day (Fraser et al., 1997, Journal of Internal Medicine). Non-cross-linked HA that is not bound disappears just as quickly, while cross-linked HA resists degradation and remains longer. This one design difference determines everything: duration, recommended number of sessions, and the nature of the effects you feel.
A standard skin booster injection is a method in which non-cross-linked HA is densely injected into the superficial dermis using an injector. Its advantage is the fast response, with hydration and radiance appearing immediately after injection, but because it breaks down quickly, a series of treatments—typically around three sessions at 2–4 week intervals—is the standard design. In a randomized controlled study by Baspeyras et al. (2013, Archives of Dermatological Research), when non-cross-linked HA was injected three times at one-month intervals, the skin stiffness index (E1) improved by about 10.9%, and the effect was maintained three months after the final treatment.
Revive (Belotero Revive, CPM-HA20G) is a product from Germany's Merz and is a skin booster that combines 20 mg/mL of cross-linked HA with 17.5 mg/mL of the moisturizing ingredient glycerol. In a multicenter randomized clinical trial involving 159 participants (Kerscher et al., 2021, PRS Global Open), skin hydration improved at all follow-up points in the dry-skin group, and the 3-treatment group showed a statistically significant improvement at week 16 (P=0.0013). In a study published in 2025 (Luna et al., Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology), stratum corneum hydration increased by an average of 14.9% after one treatment and 16.6% after two treatments.

HiloWave is a French non-animal HA composite skin booster that contains both high-molecular-weight HA and low-molecular-weight HA, and it was approved in Korea as a Class 4 medical device and introduced into clinical practice in 2025. It is characterized by a method that minimizes injection points, so it is relatively less burdensome in terms of pain, bumps, and downtime, and it can be designed as a single-session treatment. The maintenance period is generally stated to be around 3–6 months.
| Comparison item | Standard skin booster (non-cross-linked HA) | Revive | HiloWave |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design | Non-cross-linked HA | Cross-linked HA + glycerol | High- and low-molecular-weight HA composite |
| Onset of effect | Immediately | Immediately to within weeks | Hydration immediately, elasticity in 2–3 weeks |
| Duration of effect | Weeks (repeat treatment expected) | Months (up to 36 weeks) | About 3–6 months |
| Recommended number of sessions | About 3 sessions at 2–4 week intervals | Can be completed in one session | Can be designed as a single-session treatment |
In our clinic, we first look at skin hydration and elasticity, as well as the patient’s schedule, rather than the product name. In Diore Clinical, we believe that the injection design—how much to place in which layer—determines the outcome, so we plan by dividing the dosage by area. If you need instant radiance before an event or photo shoot, a standard skin booster is the reasonable choice. If you are concerned about inner dryness and rough skin texture and want results that last for several months from just one treatment, Revive is a good fit. If reduced elasticity or early volume loss is also visible, or if you are concerned about pain, HiloWave can be considered first.

For foreign patients with a short stay in Korea, the most important criterion is 'how many visits are needed.' Revive and HiloWave can be designed as single-session treatments, making them realistic options for short itineraries. Clinics in the Gangnam area often use a process in which skin condition and goals are first assessed through a remote consultation before the visit, and then the dosage by area is finalized on the day of the appointment before proceeding directly to treatment. If you are considering a skin booster for hydration and elasticity improvement, it may also be helpful to receive a combined consultation for regenerative injections such as Rejuran, which is based on PDRN. This is because the ingredients and mechanisms of action are different and often complementary.
By design, Revive lasts longer. While the combination of cross-linked HA and glycerol has been reported to improve hydration for up to 36 weeks, a standard skin booster is a treatment that needs to be repeated every few weeks.
Yes, it is a treatment that can be designed as a one-time complete session. Hydration and radiance are typically felt within a few days after the treatment, and changes in elasticity and volume appear gradually over 2–3 weeks.
Yes, if you choose a treatment that can be completed in one session, such as Revive or HiloWave, it can fit a short stay schedule. If you determine the treatment area and dosage in advance through a pre-visit consultation, it can be completed in one visit.
Yes. Since Rejuran works based on PDRN and has a different mechanism of action from HA skin boosters, a combined treatment plan is sometimes used depending on skin condition. The exact combination and interval should be decided after evaluation.
If you need immediate radiance, consider a standard skin booster; if duration is the priority, consider Revive; if you want both hydration and elasticity, consider HiloWave. However, we recommend deciding your final choice after a skin evaluation.
